Creating Set Pieces

For the past couple of years, I’ve been tinkering with making set pieces. And one of the bigger problems I’d encounter is “How do I easily go from an idea on an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper and scale it up to a large sheet of wood?” Yes, there is coordinate/graphing math that you can use, but I decided to try projection mapping. It was WAAAAAY easier, super quick, and scaled perfectly.

For this lil’ learning lesson, ya just need a projector and some way to get your idea/graphic into the projector. I tried playing around with loading the graphic on to a USB stick and then attempting to use the internal media player to project it, but I kept running into problems. So instead, since I’m an iPhone user and my projector supports AirPlay, it was easy.

It helps if your projector has keystone correction abilities (as most have some rudimentary form) because you’ll want to get your projection squared up with the projection surface, in this scenario, a sheet of plywood.

You can also do this with vector art, and a printer. Inkscape ( free & open ) has the ability to large scale print across multiple pieces of paper for those who do not have a projector.

I had done something similar to that years ago. While it does work, I found it very time consuming. Perhaps supply a link to Inkscape or a youtube video of someone using it?
